The scan page is where you'd go to do any ad-hoc scans to test scanning of a product or to start creating the reference image for a product.
To create the reference image scroll to the bottom of the page where you'd find the fields for creating a new product. To create a new side for a product you go to the product first then select the relevant side and do a scan.
At this point the dates are not recognised as you'll need to say which side has the date and the date format.
