Locations are where products are stored in, it is a key element in the whole system. The code is used to help order the picking, the order used is alphabetical. This is an important point when designing the coding layout of the warehouse locations. A path that is alphabetic around the warehouse would make it much more efficient when navigating the warehouse.
A common location format is A 01 01 01 - to stand for Aisle A, Rack 01, Shelf 01, and Bin 01. Whatever format is decided upon, they can be entered directly into the system or uploaded via spreadsheet.
Against each location is the current in-stock figure for all products that has quantity in that location.
Locations can be marked as quarantined locations, these locations will not be available for picking.
There is only one primary location and it is the only location allowed to be picked from. It is the location with the lowest alphabetical code. The other locations are shown when picking, but the user cannot pick from those locations. A transfer must be made first to use those locations.
It is important that for any items low in stock in primary location, a transfer is made from the secondary locations to aid in the speed of picking.
Locations can be searched for using the search bar by code. As it is typed, the number returned is reduced. e.g. searching all AB locations
